Introduction
Sometimes you work on an image for so long but alas! the size doesn't fit exactly like what you have
imagine it to be. Other times you obtain images from your digital cameras but the file size is too big
and might eat into your bandwidth.
No worries, because with photoshop's resizing tool, you can easily defeat
these problems. This tutorial teaches you exactly how you can resize your
images without distorting the original look of your images.
Tools required
- Adobe Photoshop
This guide is written for Adobe Photoshop users, written base on Adobe Photoshop 7.
Before you start
- Change your image mode to RGB color by "Images > Mode > RGB color", make sure this is set especially for
pixelled image.
It is also best to select this option for other images.
This prevents any image distortion when resizing.

How to resize images - Non pixelled images
Follow these steps to resize an image.
- Open the file in Photoshop.

- Select Image > Image Size. There will be a pop up.


- Make sure that the boxes for "Constrain Proportions" and Resample Image: Bicubic" is selected.
Input the new size values in the highlighted box. In this case, I shrinked the image with respect
to the width size, 200px. (If you want to enlarge a picture, key in a value that that is bigger than the
original value.) Click "ok" to apply the changes.

- You should able to see a change in the image size.

How to resize images - Pixelled images
Follow these steps to resize an image.
- Open the file in Photoshop.

- Select Image > Image Size. There will be a pop up.


- Make sure that the boxes for "Constrain Proportions" and Resample Image: Nearest Neighbor"
is selected.
Input the new size values in the highlighted box. In this case, I enlarged the image with respect
to the width size, 400px. (If you want to shrink a picture, key in a value that that is smaller than the
original value. However, shrinking of a pixel image might cause distortion.) Click "ok" to apply the changes.

- You should able to see a change in the image size.

- Troubleshooting: If you see this image instead,

you might have forgotten to apply "Resample Image: Nearest Neighbor".
Try step 2 again.
Tips
You should select "Resample Image > Bicubic" if you want to smooth edges especially when enlarging images.
Select "Resample Image > Nearest Neighbor" if you want to crisp lines and hard edges especially
when enlarging pixelled images.
